In the Interbalkan Medical Center, specialized general surgeons are treating various cases of surgical obesity, implementing the most modern and safe methods, with either open surgery or laparoscopically.

The laparoscopic method provides access to the abdominal area, without the need to make an incision, with the use of optical fibers, a video camera and special surgical instruments.

There are two methods for the surgical treatment of obesity.

The first is the adjustable gastric ring, which is a technique that aims to reduce the size of the stomach, and consequently minimize the food and calories intake, which will ultimately lead to weight loss. It’s made of silicone and is placed laparoscopically in the upper part of the stomach, by creating 4-5 small holes of approximately 1-2 centimeters wide. It gives stomach an hourglass shape. The upper part is small in size and fills quickly with a small quantity of food. The entire operation takes place under general anesthesia and lasts for approximately 1 hour.

The second method is the gastric sleeve. During the operation, the doctors are surgically removing two thirds of the stomach, while the remaining gets the shape of a tube with small capacity, so the patient won’t be able to eat much. The weight loss is impressive during the first year and can reach as high as 50 or 60% off of the original weight. For the subsequent 1-2 years, the weight loss is stabilized and patients are the only ones responsible in case of regression.
